Beer Development Life Cycle (BDLC)

Overview

Beer has a lifecycle, and so it stands to reason that beer development has a lifecycle as well.

The Beer Development Life Cycle (BDLC) is the process by which an idea becomes a finished beer and ultimately informs future iterations. The BDLC provides a structured approach to brewing while preserving the experimentation and creativity that make homebrewing enjoyable.

Like software development, brewing is rarely a one-time effort. Recipes evolve. Processes improve. Equipment changes. New ideas emerge.

The purpose of the BDLC is to provide a repeatable framework for managing that evolution.

Ideation → Recipe Architecture → Development Brew → Testing & Validation → Deployment → Monitoring & Observability → Iteration

The lifecycle is continuous. Iteration naturally feeds back into Ideation, creating a cycle of continuous improvement.

Ideation

Every beer starts as an idea.

Sometimes inspiration comes from a commercial beer. Sometimes it comes from a style guideline. Sometimes it comes from standing in front of a grain shelf wondering what would happen if you tried something different.

Ideation is where brewers ask questions.

Examples:

  • What would happen if I increased the coriander in my witbier?
  • Could this IPA benefit from a different dry hop schedule?
  • How would this recipe taste with a different yeast strain?
  • Can I create a better version of a beer I already enjoy?

Ideation is the playground of great beer.

No recipe exists without an idea.

Recipe Architecture

Once an idea has been identified, the next step is to design the beer.

Recipe Architecture defines the ingredients, processes, and expected outcomes that will be used to transform an idea into a finished product.

The recipe serves as the blueprint for the beer.

Development Brew

Development Brew is the execution phase of the Beer Development Life Cycle.

During this stage, the recipe architecture is transformed into a physical batch of beer through brewing, fermentation, conditioning, and packaging activities.

Activities may include:

  • Milling grain
  • Mashing
  • Lautering or BIAB extraction
  • Boiling
  • Hop additions
  • Chilling
  • Fermentation
  • Dry hopping
  • Conditioning

The objective of a Development Brew is not necessarily perfection.

The objective is to create a real-world implementation of the recipe design that can be evaluated and improved.

This is where theory becomes beer.

Testing & Validation

Testing & Validation determines whether the finished beer achieved its intended goals.

While Development Brew creates the product, Testing & Validation confirms whether the resulting beer aligns with recipe expectations and quality objectives.

Sensory Evaluation

A beer does not need to be perfect to pass validation.

The goal is to determine whether the batch successfully delivered its intended outcome.

Deployment

Deployment is the process of preparing and releasing a validated beer for consumption.

Once a beer has completed Testing & Validation, it enters Deployment.

Deployment activities may include:

  • Bottling
  • Kegging
  • Canning
  • Carbonation
  • Labeling
  • Distribution

The objective of Deployment is to preserve the quality established during brewing and deliver a consistent experience to the end user.

A beer is considered deployed when it is packaged, released, and ready to be enjoyed.

Monitoring & Observability

Monitoring & Observability focuses on understanding how a beer performs after deployment.

Monitoring answers:

What happened?

Examples:

  • Original Gravity was 1.052
  • Final Gravity was 1.011
  • Fermentation lasted 8 days
  • Carbonation reached target levels

Observability answers:

Why did it happen?

Examples:

  • Why did attenuation increase?
  • Why did the beer finish drier than expected?
  • Why did hop aroma fade more quickly than previous batches?
  • Why was clarity improved compared to earlier releases?

The purpose of Monitoring & Observability is not simply to collect data.

The purpose is to generate actionable insights.

Iteration

Iteration is the process of applying lessons learned from previous stages of the lifecycle.

Every batch produces information.

Some of that information comes from measurements. Some comes from observations. Some comes from tasting notes and feedback from others.

BevOps treats all of this information as valuable operational data.

Questions that drive iteration include:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work well?
  • What should be changed?
  • What should remain the same?

Iteration may result in:

Patch Releases

Operational improvements.

Example:

  • Improved wort chilling procedure
  • Updated cleaning process
  • New fermentation monitoring workflow

Minor Releases

Flavor-impacting recipe refinements.

Example:

  • Increased coriander addition
  • Adjusted hop schedule

Major Releases

Fundamental recipe redesigns.

The goal of iteration is not perfection.

The goal of iteration is continuous improvement.

Every batch should leave the brewer with more knowledge than they had before brewing it.

The Continuous Loop

The Beer Development Life Cycle is not linear.

The output of one release becomes the input for the next.

Observations generate ideas.

Ideas become recipes.

Recipes become beer.

Beer produces knowledge.

Knowledge drives improvement.

And the cycle begins again.
