What is BevOps?

BevOps is the application of DevOps-inspired principles to brewing. At its core, BevOps seeks to improve repeatability, observability, and continuous improvement while preserving the creativity and experimentation that make homebrewing enjoyable.

Brewing is equal parts science and art. Recipes evolve. Processes improve. Ingredients change. BevOps provides a framework for documenting those changes so that successful batches can be repeated, lessons can be preserved, and improvements can be made intentionally rather than accidentally.

Why BevOps Exists

Beer is brewed under a wide range of conditions. A recipe brewed today may not be identical to the same recipe brewed six months from now.

Perhaps a different crop year of hops introduces subtle flavor differences. Maybe a new malt supplier affects color or body. Maybe a brewer discovers a better chilling process or fermentation schedule.

Without documentation, many of these changes become difficult to identify or reproduce.

BevOps exists to help brewers answer a simple question:

Why did this batch turn out the way it did?

By documenting recipes, processes, observations, and outcomes, brewers can better understand the factors that contribute to a successful batch and make informed decisions about future iterations.

Creativity Through Documentation

The purpose of BevOps is not to eliminate creativity from brewing.

The purpose of BevOps is to document creativity so it can be repeated, improved, and shared.

Experimentation remains one of the most rewarding aspects of homebrewing. BevOps does not attempt to constrain that experimentation. Instead, it provides a structure for capturing the results of those experiments.

A successful experiment can become a repeatable process.

An unsuccessful experiment can become a documented lesson.

Both outcomes have value.

Continuous Improvement

Every batch of beer produces information.

Some information comes from measurements such as gravity, attenuation, temperature stability, or carbonation. Other information comes from sensory evaluation, tasting notes, and feedback from those who enjoy the beer.

BevOps treats all of this information as valuable operational data.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is continuous improvement.

Each batch should leave the brewer with more knowledge than they had before brewing it.

No amount of documentation, telemetry, dashboards, or metrics should distract from the simple purpose of sharing good beer with good people.

A Living Framework

BevOps is intended to evolve.

As brewing practices improve and new ideas emerge, the framework itself should continue to adapt. Brewers are encouraged to challenge assumptions, contribute improvements, and iterate on the framework in the same way they would iterate on a recipe.

Like brewing itself, BevOps is never truly finished.

It is continuously fermenting.
